encounter with John Brough's 'Poems from the Sanskrit' which I discovered in a
friend's library whilst house-sitting during the summer of 2007. I was struck by
their succinct, inspired simplicity and quickly set to work. Many of the poems I have
selected are by unknown authors (although John Brough makes educated guesses as to
their origin) so I have freely adapted them in order to produce a workable text. This
has sometimes involved combining more than one poem sharing similar subject matter
and verse structure. The resulting four songs were conceived for a small choir of
eight voices: two sopranos, two altos, two tenors and two basses (sopranos and basses
dividing). However, a larger ensemble should be equally effective."John Frith |
