"These five poems date from Rupert Brooke's years of military service (1913–1915). Indeed, the final song 'The Dance' was written only months before his untimely death at the age of 27. Brooke was writing far from home and I find his heady mix of overt romanticism tinged with nostalgia extremely compelling. My original settings were first performed in 1978 by the Northampton Bach Choir to a string orchestra accompaniment. Now, heavily revised, they are published in their final form for unaccompanied SATB choir. It should be noted that I have divided the voice parts to create a double choir in the first setting 'Song'. In addition 'One Day' requires a secure tenor soloist."John Frith
